Is Clock Synchronization Essential for Power Management in IEEE 802.11-Based Mobile Ad Hoc Networks?

چکیده
Power is always a major concern for mobile devices. To save precious energy, mobile devices choose to stay in a low power mode by turning off their transceivers when it is not involved with transmission. However, they need to wake up to allow packets originated from them sent and those coming to them received. This presents a challenge in the distributed environment as in ad hoc networks. In this paper, we discuss the relationship between clock synchronization and power-saving in IEEE 802.11-like mobile ad hoc networks. Based on observations and studies of other power-saving protocols, we propose an integrated protocol for both clock synchronization and power-saving targeted for a mobile environment. It handles topology changes satisfactorily, and simulation results show it has superior performance over other protocols.

Power-Saving Protocols for IEEE 802.11-Based Multi-Hop Ad Hoc Networks
Power-saving is a critical issue for almost all kinds of portable devices. In this paper, we consider the design of power-saving protocols for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) that allow mobile hosts to switch to a low-power sleep mode. The MANETs being considered in this paper are characterized by unpredictable mobility, multi-hop communication, and no clock synchronization mechanism. In partic...
متن کاملPerforming Clock Synchronization for Power Management in Multi-hop Ad Hoc Networks
One of the common underlying assumptions in IEEE 802.11 standards' ad hoc mode operations is that all stations in the same IBSS can hear each other directly. In other words, the ad hoc mode of 802.11 supports only single-hop ad hoc networks. When extended to multi-hop environments, IEEE 802.11 protocols show a poor performance, if they are able to work at all. This has been acknowledged by rese...
متن کاملMulti-hop Time Synchronization Protocol for IEEE 802.11 Wireless Ad Hoc Networks
Clock synchronization is very important for power management protocol in a multi-hop MANET. However, since MANET is a network temporarily formed by a collection of mobile nodes without the aid of any centralized coordinator, clock synchronization is very difficult to achieve. Therefore, most of previous works on power efficiency assumed asynchronous clock. As a consequence, a mobile node will w...

Many performance evaluations for IEEE 802.11distributed coordination function (DCF) have been previouslyreported in the literature. Some of them have clearly indicatedthat 802.11 MAC protocol has poor performance in multi-hopwireless ad hoc networks due to exposed and hidden nodeproblems. Although RTS/CTS transmission scheme mitigatesthese phenomena, it has not been successful in thoroughlyomit...
متن کاملAccurate Clock Synchronization for IEEE 802.11-Based Wireless Networks
Clock synchronization is an essential building block for many control mechanisms used in wireless networks, for example, frequency hopping, power management, and packet scheduling. Although the IEEE 802.11 standard [1, 2, 3, 4] provides a clock synchronization mechanism, it was never designed to support higher-layer network services or mechanisms, and has well-documented problems [5] especially...
